Insulating your exsisting garage door

February 12, 2012

Over the past few weeks, I have seen a few customers insulate their non-insulated garage door. They purchased a kit from a hardware box store or just bought foam panels and cut them down to size. This seems like a good idea, but there is a huge safety issue that the directions in the box or the sales guy at the store doesn’t tell you. When you add insulation to a garage door you are also adding weight to the door which is more weight than your springs are made to carry. This is where the safety issue comes in. If your Garage Door is open and you pull the openers emergency release your door will slam to the ground like a guillotine, and cause damage to your Garage Door or worse hurt someone that is in the way. To solve this problem you should contact a professional Garage Door Company to come out and replace the old springs with new ones that will be correct for the new weight of the Garage Door.
